The CBSE
Cryptic Crossword Contest 2015 is the largest crossword solving championship for school students
in India. This championship is an endeavor to make school education more
efficient and interactive by the means of extra-curricular activities.
The competition
was conducted in two phases :
Phase 1- City
Round (May- September):
School teams
consisting of two students solve a written cryptic crossword puzzle in 60
minutes.
Phase 2:
National Event (December 2015):
National Round:
A two- day event in New Delhi.
- The quarter
final: A written cryptic crossword puzzle to be solved in 60 minutes by all the
participating teams. Top 16 teams qualify for the semi-finals.
- The semi-final:
The 16 qualifying teams, placed in 4 groups of four teams each participate in
four separate, on- stage cryptic crossword contests of 60 minutes based on in a
power-point format.
- The final: Top
teams from each semi-final compete in the on-stage final.
The final event
was inaugurated on December 12 at the Civil Services Officers’ Institute (CSOI)
on Vinay Marg, New Delhi, by Mr S C Khuntia, Secretary (Education and
Literacy), Government of India. Around 1,000 school teams participated in the
34 City Rounds across the country. It is a CBSE challenge for students studying
in classes IX-XII of schools affiliated to any of the recognized boards of
school education in the country. The CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest 2015 came
to a close in New Delhi on Sunday (December 13) after a spectacular two-day
Grand Finale. After a brilliant show by all participating teams, the team from La
Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata, was crowned the National
Crossword Champion 2015.
Six teams had
qualified for the final after four semi final rounds. Besides the winners they
included the two next top teams on the basis of the number of clues cracked.
The three other finalists were PSBB Chennai; Maharaja Agrasen School, New
Delhi; and VPMS Pune.
The top three
teams were represented by Olana Marie Peters and Roshini Chakraborty; Aachman
Shekhar and Apala Mandal; and Arpan Chatterji and Divya Vaid, respectively.The
winners were awarded the Champion’s trophy and a cheque of Rs 25,000. Besides
their trophies, the runner-up and the third top team got cheques of Rs 15,000
and Rs 10,000, respectively.
